Mercado Benito Juárez.
A labyrinth of souvenirs, fruit, vegetables, spices (and grasshoppers vendors…)
It was here we tried tejate also known as the “drink of the gods”.
It’s made with toasted corn flour, paste cacao beans, ground-up mamey pits (a sweet fruit), a white flower known as flor de cacao and water.
The froth is from the oils created when the ingredients are kneaded and mixed together.
The taste was pleasant and not too sweet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Mexican food, where to start. We fell in love with Mexico and Mexican food!
Here’s some of Alex’s faves from Mexico City, the first time around!

Esquites - 🌽 street corn! The favourite! Favourite! Huge husks of Mexican fluffy corn with Mexican lemon salt and chili (hold the cheese though!)
Tacos de canasta - 🌮🧺 soft, steamed street tacos. Alex’s favourite street tacos! An amazingly popular place near Zocalo in Mexico City has wonderful, cheap tacos. Apart from meat you can choose potato or beans. 🥔 Potato is where it is at! These are amazing.
Tostadas - 🌵🎃 usually a fried tortilla with toppings. In Alex’s case cactus! Yum!
Also in the next tostada picture cactus and huitlacoche - corn fungus? What! Looks weird, tastes good though. And on the other one is some cactus and flor de calabaza - squash blossom.
Enchilada - 🌽 this was a fried enchilada, without the cheese. Huitlacoche in all its mushy glory.
Cactus salad and tortillas - 🌵yum! That blue corn tortilla though.
Churros - street churros with sugar.

And this is only from the first week in Mexico! More food fun coming up later!

There were many no-meat options in Mexico :) Mexico for Alex was a lot of corn, beans, potato, cactus, squash blossom, huitlacoche and the best avocado! While knowing that refried beans often have lard in them and aren’t exactly vegan, I decided to be flexible and try my best!

A place worth the visit when in Teotihuacan is La Gruta. Our wonderful Mexican friend took us there and it didn’t disappoint. While not on the backpacker budget, it’s definitely a restaurant to remember! The restaurant is situated in a cave, the food is delicious, they show traditional dance from all around Mexico, and the whole place is lit up with beautiful candles.
The legend is that if you light your candle and make it all the way through the restaurant and up to the centre cavern without the candle going out you will be reborn!
I loved my cactus salad, not sure if Kenji loved his side of grasshoppers!

September 2019 🌞
Teotihuacan, “the place where the gods were created”. This is the name given to the pyramid complex by the Aztecs.
At the northern end of the Main Street (called the Avenue of the Dead) is the Pyramid of the Moon. The platform was likely used for rituals and tombs have been found to contain animal and human sacrifices.
South of this is the Pyramid of the Sun, one of the largest structures created Pre-columbian at 63 meters high, 225 meters long.
This amazing structure can be reach from Mexico City and is about 50 kilometers away. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What do you know about Frida Kahlo?
Her life story is so inspiring.
Learning more about Frida Kahlo, and actually being in her Blue House was an indescribable feeling.
- For many she is an icon of Mexican heritage, feminism, political activism and much more.
- Frida contracted polio at a young age which caused her right leg to be shorter than her left.
- She was impaled through the pelvis in a bus accident for which she was hospitalized for months. She had to give up her dream of being a doctor and instead focused on her hobby; painting. Her family created a special easel so she could paint in bed.
- Due to this accident she had spine problems and had to suffer with pain and wear painful corsets throughout her life.
- She arrived at her first solo exhibition in Mexico in an ambulance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

September 2019 🇲🇽
In September we arrived in Mexico and over the next one and a half months soon became one of our favourite countries!! Here are some impressionable buildings in Mexico City!
Palacio de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre showing music and arts performances, looking amazing both day and night.
La Casa de los Azulejos, The House of Tiles. Once an aristocrat house, now a restaurant with stunning decor.
Chapultepec Castle, previously a home to presidents, now a Museum. The views from the top are breathtaking! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
